If you drive in Cambodia, don’t even think about skipping on motor insurance. Heavy traffic, speeding and reckless driving make the roads a dangerous place, and, sadly, traffic deaths are not uncommon in Phnom Penh and elsewhere.
The World Health Organisation conducted a Global status report on road safety in 2013, which estimated road deaths in Cambodia at 2,300 per annum. Despite the fact that Cambodia was one of the countries selected to be part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Global Road Safety Programme, between 2010 and 2014, road deaths have not stopped increasing.
The Phnom Penh Post reported a steep rise in road deaths in 2019, with year on year figures up by 100 for the third quarter of the year. Figures from the National Police showed that 488 people were killed and 1,494 injured in the 988 traffic accidents reported between July and September 2019. We can only imagine how many more accidents went unreported!
The causes of accidents on Cambodia’s roads are numerous. Speeding is responsible for a third of them, but other reasons cited by the police include failing to respect other road users’ right of way, failure to stay in lane, overtaking without due care, drunk driving, vehicle faults and driving while tired.
One thing is for sure: it’s a jungle out there on the roads, and the likelihood of having an accident is high. This means that insurance is non-negotiable for anyone wishing to get behind the wheel. Whether you zip about Phnom Penh on a 125cc without a licence or travel across the country in your Toyota Prius, you need to ensure that you have adequate insurance cover.
You may be the world’s most careful driver, but you can’t control everyone else on the roads. When others skip lights, weave from one lane to the next or pull out when they don’t have the right of way, your vehicle, or, worse still, you could end up a casualty.
A damaged vehicle is costly enough, but if you suffer a serious injury requiring hospital treatment and you want to access the best care available in Cambodia – or even need to seek treatment further afield in Thailand or Vietnam – the costs could spiral out of control. Why take the risk that you will have to pay for this out of your own pocket – bye bye savings! – when you can transfer the risk to an insurer for a very reasonable sum each month?
