Making a will is a really important part of your financial planning. It is something many people neglect to do figuring that it\u2019s administrative hassle that they don\u2019t need to bother with, often because they don\u2019t consider themselves wealthy enough to merit one or because they believe that their spouse and children will automatically inherit their estate.<\/p>\n

However, making assumptions about what will happen to your estate when you die is unwise and neither of these arguments holds water. A will is the only way to be absolutely sure that your assets will go where you want them to after you die.<\/p>\n

1. A lengthy probate process<\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n

If you have no will, intestacy laws are applied in strict accordance with the law. Even if they would deliver the result that you want, this still lengthens the probate process. 2. Your partner\/stepchildren could lose their home<\/span><\/h5>\n

4. Your children could suffer<\/span><\/h5>\n

If you don\u2019t have a will which sets out who you choose to be the legal guardian of your children if you die, it falls to a court to decide. They may or may not choose the same person as you but why leave it to chance? Even if the choice of legal guardian is obvious, having to go through the court procedure piles on additional stress at what will already be a very difficult time for your kids. It\u2019s so easily avoided by getting your desired legal guardians down in writing.<\/p>\n

5. An unnecessarily high inheritance tax bill<\/span><\/h5>\n

Minimising an inheritance tax liability is an almost universal desire and a will is one of the tools you will need to put in place as part of a bigger estate planning strategy.
