As Bitcoin hits $100,000 <\/em>Benoit Chappet <\/em>takes a look at the astonishing trajectory of the cryptocurrency and considers the pros and cons of investing in the gold standard of the crypto world.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

A cryptocurrency milestone<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Widely considered to be the world\u2019s first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin remains the most valuable and widely recognised digital currency in the world.<\/p>\n

And this week marks a momentous occasion as it hits US$100,000 for the first time.<\/p>\n

Whilst early adopters were mainly tech enthusiasts, libertarians, and cryptography advocates, cryptocurrencies have become increasingly mainstream, with institutional investors, large corporations and everyday consumers integrating these digital assets into their financial strategies.<\/p>\n

Despite its ups and downs, Bitcoin has proved to be a trailblazer for the thousands of digital currencies now in existence and one of very few that is worthy of consideration for savvy investors.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Bitcoin: a potted history<\/strong><\/p>\n

Introduced in 2009 by the pseudonymous creator Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin established the concept of a decentralised digital currency that operates without a central authority, using blockchain technology.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin’s users can send and receive funds without needing to trust a third party such as a bank or government to verify or process transactions. Instead, the blockchain and miners validate and secure transactions independently.<\/p>\n

The $100,000 milestone is just the latest event in a remarkable trajectory for the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n

On May 22, 2010, a developer named Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas. This significant transaction demonstrated Bitcoin’s potential as a medium of exchange, even though the value of Bitcoin at the time was negligible compared to its worth today.<\/p>\n

Bitcoin exchanges began to facilitate trading from the early 2010s and as it gained popularity over the course of the decade, it became highly volatile.<\/p>\n

After a major exchange hack and controversy over its use on illegal platforms, Bitcoin reached a pivotal milestone in 2017, soaring to nearly $20,000. This period marked a turning point as more companies and financial institutions began recognising Bitcoin as a legitimate asset class, paving the way for greater mainstream adoption.<\/p>\n

At the start of the decade, Bitcoin’s legitimacy was further solidified when Tesla<\/a> announced its investment in the cryptocurrency and El Salvador<\/a> became the first country to adopt it as legal tender in 2021. These moves helped to fuel widespread interest and institutional adoption, signalling a new era for Bitcoin as both a store of value and a medium of exchange.<\/p>\n

Fast forward to 2024 and Bitcoin is riding high with this record-breaking peak.<\/p>\n

The cryptocurrency market<\/strong><\/p>\n

The cryptocurrency market is currently undergoing significant transformation as it matures. There is a growing willingness among investors to allocate a significant portion of their portfolios to Bitcoin, reflecting increasing trust and acceptance.<\/p>\n

According to Marshall Beard, COO at Gemini, which produces an annual State of Crypto report<\/a> \u2018The introduction of spot crypto ETFs in the United States and the significant headway toward thoughtful regulation in many jurisdictions globally has positioned the industry for strong growth as retail investors rejoin the crypto market or get started for the first time.\u2019<\/p>\n

So, is it time to add Bitcoin into the mix of your investments?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Cryptocurrencies: invest with caution<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are two main reasons why investors should adopt a cautious approach to investing in cryptocurrencies: volatility and a lack of regulation.<\/p>\n

As the graph below shows, Bitcoin’s price has experienced significant fluctuations over the last five years. From a peak of around $68,000 in October 2021 (partly fuelled by Tesla’s investment and adoption of Bitcoin\u200b) the value of the cryptocurrency fell to around $16,500 in December. This was due to a combination of factors including a broader market downturn, increasing regulatory scrutiny, and the collapse of major crypto platforms like FTX which caused a significant loss of investor confidence, triggering widespread sell-offs.<\/p>\n

What happens next for Bitcoin is anyone\u2019s guess, as its value is heavily influenced by market sentiment, regulation, and technological advancements. What is clear, however, is that this type of investment is not for the faint-hearted, nor for those relying on consistent returns\u200b.<\/p>\n

In addition, a lack of regulation continues to be a concern for many investors. Countries are still grappling with how to regulate digital currencies effectively, balancing innovation with security, fraud prevention, and anti-money laundering controls. For now, cryptocurrencies remain an unregulated and high-risk investment when compared to a balanced portfolio of traditional assets and I would generally advise against most of them.<\/p>\n

If you are tempted to dip your toe into the crypto market, my advice would be to stick with Bitcoin, the gold standard of cryptocurrencies, and ensure that it constitutes a small fraction of your portfolio.<\/p>\n
