What course of action should you take? <\/em><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>Geopolitics and market volatility<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>In our interconnected world, it is clear that the tragic events unfolding in Ukraine will have an effect on the markets. Market volatility in response to what is happening in Eastern Europe was always to be expected.<\/p>\n<p>It should not, however, be cause for panic. A key message from our investment partner, Tilney shortly after the war broke out stated that \u2018Historically, the market\u2019s response to geopolitical events tends to be short-lived. Our analysis finds that, on average, losses resulting from geopolitical events are erased within one month.\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, financial markets have already calmed significantly as the world has united against Russia, imposing severe economic sanctions in the hope of choking the Russian economy, and fierce resistance within Ukraine has significantly slowed Putin\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, the war is unlikely to end soon so continued volatility in the short term seems inevitable, especially as the Ukraine situation isn\u2019t the only issue currently affecting the markets. Multi-decade high inflation and the removal of accommodative monetary policy were already proving to be a challenge to the markets even before the Russian invasion.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #333399;\"><strong>What will happen next in the markets?<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>As tensions ebb and flow over the course of 2022, investors should expect further volatility. <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/08\/economy\/oil-gas-sanctions-russia-ukraine\/index.html\">EU officials announced harsh sanctions<\/a> on Russian natural gas and plans to achieve energy independence from Moscow \u2018well before 2030\u2019 to ramp up the pressure on Putin. In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/eu-excludes-seven-russian-banks-swift-official-journal-2022-03-02\/\">seven Russian banks have been removed from the SWIFT system<\/a>, although those handling energy payments remain.<\/p>\n<p>When the Russia-Ukraine conflict first started on 24<sup>th<\/sup> February, Tilney outlined three potential scenarios that could play out. The extent of the invasion and these recent measures effectively mean that scenario three is the one we are witnessing.
